Becoming a mother is a profound transformation, a metamorphosis that transcends mere biology. It’s a journey that changes a woman's entire physiology and reshapes her identity, relationships, and worldview. Welcome to Matrescence Unveiled, where we delve into the heart of this transformative experience.

What Is Matrescence?

Matrescence is the process of becoming a mother. Just as adolescence marks the transition from childhood to adulthood, matrescence is the bridge from womanhood to motherhood. It encompasses physical, hormonal, psychological, social, and even spiritual changes. Whether you give birth, adopt, or embrace surrogacy, matrescence weaves its intricate threads into your life.

Why Does Matrescence Matter?

  1. Identity Shifts: During matrescence, you’ll redefine yourself. Your body changes, relationships evolve, and your role in the world takes on new dimensions. It’s a profound shift that deserves recognition and support.

  2. Emotional Turmoil: Matrescence isn’t all blissful baby cuddles. It can be emotionally intense, filled with joy, doubt, and vulnerability. Acknowledging these feelings helps mothers navigate this uncharted territory.

  3. Worldview Expansion: As a mother, you’ll ponder deeper questions. How do political systems affect your child’s future? What about social justice? Matrescence opens your eyes to broader issues.

SPEAKER BIOS:

ANDREA BOMBINO

Meet our Keynote Speaker 🌸 Andrea Bombino is a certified Matrescence Educator and Life Coach focused on helping women navigate their professional careers by understanding and normalizing the identity changes they experience in motherhood.

Becoming a mother in 2020 was the catalyst for Andrea diving into her own self-discovery journey and subsequent career expansion which led to the creation of her coaching and consulting business. After 15 years of mentoring, training and coaching others to reach their full potential at companies like LinkedIn, Gartner and BetterUp, Andrea has set her sights on reimagining the future of work for women and mothers, one honest conversation at a time, through a combination of life, mindset, motherhood and career/business coaching.

Andrea is bringing to light the outdated social systems that hold women back from “having it all” and holding employers accountable for modernizing the workplace. Andrea does this as a consultant and public speaker for corporate businesses by helping them design and enhance maternity leave policies, improve maternity-related support, and create employee resource groups to increase employee retention and career satisfaction. Her dream is to help make paid parental leave the norm across the entire US for all birthing people.

Andrea has a Bachelor’s degree in Sociology and is a certified Motherhood Studies Practitioner, which means she understands and appreciates the link between the way we are raised to think about motherhood and how these beliefs play into the way we see ourselves and our careers once we become mothers. As a certified Life Coach, Mama Rising Coach, and Seasons of Matrescence Educator, Andrea utilizes matrescence theory and coaching frameworks to keep the mother at the center of the conversations. Andrea believes women are magic and have the ability to tap into their true selves to create change in the world, especially when women come together in community.

Dr. Adrian Oxman

Meet our Panelist 🌸 Dr. Adrian Oxman is a licensed Clinical Psychologist and the Director of Arrow Psychology, a private practice based in Hoboken, New Jersey.

A family psychologist, she specializes in perinatal mental health, parenting, and child development. In her consulting work, she provides supervision to doctoral students, and regularly delivers workshops and seminars on motherhood and parenting.

Dr. Oxman firmly believes that highlighting the scientific concept of matrescence would help mothers understand the profound and ongoing transformation they experience. She suggests that matrescence should be an integral part of maternal postpartum care, including routine visits with a psychologist or therapist, to effectively identify and address the emotional and psychological challenges mothers face during this transformative phase. Recognizing matrescence validates the emotional, psychological, and physical changes that occur long after childbirth, fostering a supportive environment. This awareness empowers mothers with the knowledge that their evolving identity is a natural part of motherhood, encouraging them to seek support and prioritize self-care.

Dr. Oxman completed her Master of Education and doctoral degrees at Pace University where she was the recipient of the Ivan Wentworth-Rohr Award for Outstanding Clinical Practice.

As the proud mother of two strong-willed children. Dr. Oxman believes that her own parenting experiences enrich her therapeutic work, providing her with greater empathy and understanding for the children and families she serves.

Doucky Esquijarosa

Meet our Panelist 🌸Dougmary Esquijarosa, also known as Coach Doucky, is a Women’s Fitness and Nutrition Expert, and co-founder of Become Fit Forever, based in Jersey City, NJ.

With a passion for wellness and a desire to share her expertise, Coach Doucky specializes in habit formation and women’s fitness, guiding women from postpartum through perimenopause and menopause. Her mission is to boost moms’ confidence through better nutrition, aiming to free the next generation from diet culture.

Coach Doucky emphasizes that all foods fit into a healthy lifestyle, whether it’s a donut or a salad! Proper nutrition and exercise are particularly important during matrescence, helping to reset the body’s hormonal and mineral balance affected by postnatal depletion. Through a balanced diet and regular physical activity, mothers can support their brain’s adaptation, enhance emotional resilience, and improve overall well-being.

Coach Doucky is dedicated to guiding mothers on this journey, ensuring they have the tools and knowledge to thrive through the transformative years of motherhood.

Andrea Yates

Meet our panelist 🌸 Andrea Yates is a postpartum doula located in Hoboken, NJ. She holds a bachelor of science in women’s studies and a master of science in physiology and biophysics.

Andrea always planned to pursue a career path relating to women’s health and reproductive justice issues. However, after becoming a mother herself, she shifted from corporate America to the deeply personal work of becoming a postpartum doula.

As an avid learner, Andrea consumed almost an unlimited amount of information during pregnancy related to conception, pregnancy, childbirth, and newborn care however there was relatively limited information covering the postpartum period for the birthing person. This phase, known as matrescence, is a critical period of transformation that is often overlooked by traditional western medicine and mainstream discussions about postpartum care. Having that experience, Andrea decided she was meant to come alongside new moms during this transformative time and set out to learn all she could about postpartum doulas and how to support and care for these mamas.
